El-P on "Rhythm Roulette"

El-P was the most recent victim (or whatever you make of it) on Mass Appeal's Rhythm Roulette web series.

The Brooklyn rapper, known as well for his solo efforts as he is for the monstrously good Run The Jewels (never forget that), is also one of rap's finest producers. Fans familiar with the series will note the premise; a producer picks three random LP's blindfolded and warps them into something of a beat. El-P's collection comes with soul and Beethoven, so how he weaves that into something remotely good is insane. Check it out below.

88-Keys - Rhythm Roulette (Mass Appeal)

Early last month, we got our first taste of the ongoing and totally awesome Rhythm Roulette series from Mass Appeal, featuring Party Supplies. The premise of the series is to take some of today's best young producers, head over to a record store, have them pick three records blindfolded, and turn those records into a track.

Party Supplies made it out fine, coming out with obscure disco-era funk LPs. 88-Keys, however, "bombed" his picks, even ending up with a Steve Martin's 1977 Grammy-winning comedy album Let's Get Small. In the end, 88-Keys isn't terribly happy with it.

Party Supplies - Rhythm Roulette (Mass Appeal)

Thanks to the fellows over at Mass Appeal, which is just a damn good site in its own right, we have Party Supplies giving a little inside look at his beat-making process. In the video, Party Supplies (Justin Nealis) is blindfolded and grabs three random LPs from a record store's Soul section in hopes to curate a beat out of the surprise elements for the site's new series Rhythm Roulette.

The three LPs aren't terribly familiar (O'Connor's Come Alive, Tender Aggression's Fly Disco Fly, and Instant Funk's Instant Funk V), but Justin turns them into something more palatable for Blue Chips fans.
